গোপালগঞ্জের উপর দিয়ে প্রবাহমান মধুমতি নদী (কুষ্টিয়ার উত্তরে হার্ডিঞ্জ ব্রিজের ১৯ কিলোমিটার ভাটিতে তালবাড়িয়া নামক স্থানে গড়াই নদীর উৎপত্তি। এই গড়াই নদী অনেক পথ অতিক্রম করে মধুমতি নাম নিয়ে মাগুরা, ফরিদপুর ও গোপালগঞ্জ জেলার সীমানা বরাবর প্রবাহমান। মধুমতি নদী পদ্মার একটি শাখা নদী এবং বাংলাদেশের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নদীর একটি। মধুমতি নদীকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে উঠেছে অনেক জনপদ। এক সময় নদীতে প্রচুর পরিমাণ মাছ পাওয়া যেত এবং মাছ আহরণ করে এ অঞ্চলের মানুষ জীবীকা নির্বাহ করত তাই এই নদী তীরবর্তী অনেক জেলে পল্লী লক্ষ্য করা যায়। মধুমতি নদীর ইলিশ খুব সু-স্বাদু। ইলিশ মাছের পাশাপাশি বড়বড় রুই, কাতলা, আইড়, বাঘাইড়, চিতলসহ অনেক প্রজাতির কচ্ছপ পাওয়া যেত। বর্তমানে নদীর নাব্যতা ও গভীরতা কমে যাওয়ায় মাছের পরিমাণ বহুলাংশে হ্রাস পেয়েছে। নদী তীরবর্তী মৎস্যজীবীরা অনেক কষ্টে জীবনধারণ করছে তারা মাছ ধরার পাশাপাশি অন্যান্য পেশায় আত্মনিয়োগ করছে। মধুমতি তীরবর্তী অঞ্চল খুব উর্বর এবং ফসল উত্‍পাদনের জন্য অনকূল। এখানে ধান পাটসহ অর্থকরী ফসল প্রচুর পরিমাণ ফলে। মধুমতির দৈর্ঘ্য ১৩৭ কিলোমিটার, প্রস্থ ৫০০ কিলোমিটার এবং গভীরতা প্রায় ১০.৫ মিটার।একসময় সুন্দরবন অঞ্চল থেকে বাওয়ালীরা এই নদী দিয়ে মধু সংগ্রহ করে দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে সরবরাহ করত। এই নদীর নামকরণ নিয়ে কথিত আছে- এ নদীর সুমিষ্ট জল বা মধু বহনকারী নদী বলে এই নদীর নাম হয়েছে মধুমতি । একসময় এ নদীতে বিভিন্ন ধরনের রঙ বেরঙের পালতোলা নৌকা দেখা যেত। মাঝি-মাল্লারা ভটিয়ালি, ধূয়া গানসহ বিভিন্ন ধরণের গান গাইতে দেখা যেত। নদীটির প্রবাহপথে যেসব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থান রয়েছে সেগুলো মধ্যে মাগুরা জেলা মোহাম্মদপুর উপজেলা, ফরিদপুর জেলার বোয়ালমারি, আলফাডাঙ্গা উপজেলা, নড়াইল জেলার লোহাগড়া ও কালিয়া উপজেলা, গোপালগঞ্জ জেলা শহর, গোপালগঞ্জ জেলার কাশিয়ানী, গোপালগঞ্জ সদর উপজেলার গোবরা ইউনিয়নের গোবরা মালোপাড়া, টুঙ্গিপাড়া উপজেলার পাটগাতী, বাগেরহাট জেলার মোল্লাহাট, চিতলমারী ও কচুয়া উপজেলা। পূর্বে নড়াইল জেলার ইতনা, ধলুইতলা ও বড়দিয়া, গোপালগঞ্জ জেলার মানিকদাহ, গোপালগঞ্জ লঞ্চঘাট, গোবরা লঞ্চঘাট, বাগেরহাট জেলার মোল্লাহাট স্টিমার স্টেশন ও লঞ্চ ঘাট ছিল। আজ আর স্টিমার চলে না। লঞ্চ মাঝেমধ্যে দেখা যায় তবে ইঞ্জিনচালিত নৌকা, পণ্যবহনকারী নৌযান সারা বছর চলে। প্রতিবছর কিছু কিছু পরিবারের ঘর-বাড়ি, ফসলী জমি এই নদীগর্ভে বিলীন হয়। নড়াইল জেলার মহাজন গ্রাম সম্পূর্ণ বিলীন হয় নদী ভাঙনে। বর্তমান সে নাব্যতা দেখা যায় না। ঢাকা-খুলনা মহাসড়কে গোপালগঞ্জ সদর উপজেলার গোবরা ইউনিয়ন ও বাগেরহাট জেলার মোল্লাহাটকে মিলাতে নদীর উপর নির্মিত হয়েছে মোল্লাহাট সেতু।মধুমতি নদীকে নিয়ে বহু কবিতা, গান ও চলচিত্র নির্মিত হয়েছে।)

The origin of the Gorai river at Talbariya, 19 kilometer in the Hardinge Bridge, north of Kushtia. This Gorai river crosses many roads and runs along the boundary of Magura, Faridpur and Gopalganj districts with the name Madhumati. Madhumati river is a branch of river Padma and one of the important rivers of Bangladesh. Many populations have been formed centrally on the Madhumati river. Once a lot of fish was found in the river and the people of the area obtained livelihood by taking fish, so many villages on this river were seen to be rural. Himala of Madhumati river is very good-tasting. As well as hilsa fish, many species of turtles could also be found along with large rui, katla, aad, baghaar, chital. At present, the amount of fish decreased drastically due to reduced navigability and depth of the river. Fishermen on the banks of the river are suffering very hard, they are engaged in fishing as well as other occupations. The coastal region of Madhumati is very fertile and is anchored for crop production. Here are a lot of cash crops including rice jute. Madhumati is 137 kilometers long, 500 kilometers wide and about 10.5 meters in depth. Once in the Sundarbans, the Bawalis collected honey from this Sundarbans and provided them in different parts of the country. It is said that the name of this river is Madhumati, which is known as the river carrying a sweet water or honey. At one time, there were different types of color sailing boat in the river. Various types of songs were used to sing masali-mallara bhatiyali, dhui song. The important places on the river are: Magura district Mohammadpur upazila, Boalmari, Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district, Lohagara and Kalia upazilas of Narail district, Gopalganj district town, Kashiani of Gopalganj district, Gobra Mallopara of Gobra union of Gopalganj Sadar upazila, Patgati of Tungipara upazila, Mollahat of Bagerhat district , Chitalmari and Kachua Upazilas Previously, Atina, Dholitola and Baradia of Narail, Manikdah of Gopalganj, Gopalganj Launchghat, Gobra Launchghat, Mollahat Steamer Station and Launch Ghat of Bagerhat district were there. Today the steamer does not leave. The launch can be seen sometime, but the engine boat, the productive vessels are all year round. Every year, some families, houses, crop fields are destroyed in this river bed. Mahajan's village of Narail district is completely destroyed and the river erosion. Now he is not seen navigability. Mollahat Bridge on the Dhaka-Khulna highway Gobra union of Gopalganj Sadar upazila and Mollahat of Bagerhat district have been built on the river. Many poems, songs and films have been created with the river Mudhmati.
